BROADWAY HOUSE IN THE GREAT WAR

Extracts from "Memories are Made of This" by the Churchstoke Recorders

The Churchstoke Recorders are a group of local residents who for many years have acted as guardians of local history for Churchstoke, occasionally publishing books detailing their findings. Memories are Made of This is one such publication and the following extracts are taken from it.

During the First World War Broadway House was used as a V.A.D. convalescence home for injured soldiers. The following extract provides an insite into those times.

V.A.D. Hospital - Broadway

"In 1915 there were 15 patients at Broadway which was kindly lent by Mrs Price-Davies. By 1916 there were 25 patients. The Commandant was Miss Nora Mountford, and the Quarter-Master was Miss K Mountford. Many local people helped out in various ways, including Mrs. Mountford (The School), Mrs Ward (Pentryhling), Miss Nesta Counds (The Ditches), Misses Cissie, Olive and May Fletcher, Mrs Davies (Meadows), Mrs Edwards (Alport) and Miss Jones (Weston)

Sunday School children had "egg services" when eggs were collected and put in special boxes. Four eggs in each box given to Broadway Hospital. The school children gathered and cut sticks for the Hospital's use.

At the beginning of the war Mellington School children, under Mrs Butler's guidance bought 34 yards of calico and made 42 bandages; they also made small pillow-cases and handkerchiefs. They would unravel old sheets for padding and splints, and from the sale of garden products bought wool to make Balaclava Helmets. The children of Mellington School had a concert and made a profit of £10 and used this money to buy 1030 eggs for Broadway.

In 1915 a Pound Day and Garden Fete was held at Broadway in aid of the Convalescent Home. There was a very high attendence and Bishop's Castle Brass Band played. The final figure raised was £165. Some of the proceeds were itemised as follows:

Source Amount Raised
Gate Money £14.14.10
Teas £10.13.1
Concerts £3.9.9
Soldiers' Stall £2.4.7
Shies at the Kaiser £0.8.10
Nurse Pearce's Yorkshire Terrier £0.19.1
Weight Judging £0.6.9
Gifts in Money £12.18.3
Veg Stall £1.13.0

An entry in the visitor's book at Broadway, by a Private W. Vaughan 337, 2nd Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, who was convalescing at Broadway after being wounded, states:

When I am gone away,
And far across the foam,
I shall think of the happy times,
We spent at Broadway Home."
